Rehoboth via Shag and Sidecars

Apparently I only like to take pictures of food and drink. I don't have the DSLR photos yet so for now you just get my acid camera.

After dinner at Pig+Fish, my traveling companion and I wandered over to Wilmington Avenue, with the intent to have a cocktail at Planet X, because I'd never been, but we got sidetracked (delightfully) by Shag. (their website is totally lacking)

The last time I'd been there, the place had been an Asian fusion restaurant called Yum Yum. That was many years ago. Shag is a secret psychedelic adventure. Though the signage implies a fun, sixties-era restaurant/bar (their slogan is "Hip Food, Groovy Cocktails"), the front dining area is rather subdued, and was completely empty when we arrived on a chilly Labor Day evening. Clearly, the tourists had all left town. We wondered if the place was even open, and walked to the back to find a splendid interior courtyard for dining, and a shiny bar at the back. It was a big gay adventure. The place was full of reflective surfaces and fairy lights so you know I was in heaven.

We were literally the only patrons there for awhile (it was pretty early, around 8 pm).

I discovered my new favorite drink, the Sidecar, made with Brandy and sour mix, with an orange garnish and delightful sugar rim. Now THAT's how a cocktail should look. (Pig+Fish, take note). The gays know how to do it.

In addition to the patio, there were two small side rooms with plush seating and dim lighting, perfect for making out.

Eventually a few more couples scattered in and I chatted up a nice gay couple from PA, took another couple's picture for them, and then we moved to the sparkly bar at back (I apologize for not getting more pictures, but I didn't want to look like a tourist). I started a conversation with a lovely older gay man named Nick next to me who may or may not have been one of the owners. He was quite a storyteller, and lives in Greece half the year.

Clearly we'd come on a slow night at the end of the season, because according to the staff, there'd been a raging party with several hundred people just that weekend. I'm sorry I missed it.

I'll miss you, Shag and Sidecar. Til next time!

After starting our evening so early at Stoney Lonen for happy hour at 4 pm with bartender Chester, my traveling companion, and my high school boyfriend, we were probably back at our hotel in Dewey by 10 pm, lol. Our full enjoyment of cocktails was facilitated by transportation via the always classic, Jolly Trolley.

Rehoboth in September (the food)

It was mostly cold and cloudy the whole time we were in Rehoboth but we had fun anyway. Lots of good food and drink (my favorite part of trips!). More photos and updates to come in another post.

Had a fancy dinner at Pig+Fish. I'd been there once before for appetizers and happy hour and liked the atmosphere.

This was the best salad I've had in a long time. Asian Bistro-$6.95 for small- julienne napa + bok choy cabbages, iceberg, cilantro, shredded carrots, sesame seeds, wonton crisps, spicy ginger vinaigrette. I got the small one, but wished I'd just ordered this large one instead of my flatbread pizza.

My companion enjoyed the Caesar-$6.95 for a small.

This was one of their specialty cocktails, the Prickly Pear-$7. Absolut pear vodka, triple sec, blue curacao, pineapple and a splash of sour. It's a shame it had the blue curacao, because it takes over everything in a drink. I was also majorly disappointed that it came in a boring old water glass with a thick water straw. If you are going to have a specialty named cocktail, it needs to come in a pretty glass.

To the right of my blue drink was my date's Passion lemonade - $7.50 -Smirnoff passion fruit vodka, lemonade, and splash of sprite and club soda

This was my flatbread, the Fresca- $9.95 - plum tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella, red onions, garlic, balsamic glaze.

It was not good. Looked like they just dumped a can of tomatoes and mozzarella on it. I could have made something like this myself. And I'm def not a cook. There was a sweet glaze that didn't go with the other flavors. I was really disappointed, and that says a lot, because I love Pizza.

My date got the Shrimp lejon - $11.95 - bacon, horseradish cream, scallions, monterey jack, cheddar cheeses

He loved it. I tasted part of the pizza without the shrimp on it (I don't eat seafood) and the flavors were much more complex than mine.

Overall it was a very affordable, good dinner. It was nice to get dressed up and go out to eat and not pay $35/plate like some of the fine-dining restaurants in Rehoboth were charging. Hello, recession?

This picture ALMOST (almost!) makes me want winter (but not really because the only good reason for winter is snow and it really never snows here)

Beach and Bikes and Bummed

Back home from the beach. It was cloudy and/or rained for pretty much the entire trip. Sigh. I have bad luck with vacations and weather. We rented bikes, and I biked 17 miles, which was amazing because it felt like nothing. I brought back my dad's bike, which I misremembered as being a standard mountain bike. It's not. It's a cruiser. With pedal brakes. It's fairly large and a bit unwieldy. I rode it to an event that my friend Kevin, the creator of Gay RVA, was having a few blocks away. I wonder if I can sell it and buy a decent used bike? My dad had bought it new, just a few months ago, but it already has some wear and tear on it and I doubt I can get near the cost of what it was.

In other news, nursing homes are just sad, sad places. No one should live like that. I've never been one to exclaim that if I ever get sick, I just want people to pull the plug, am not in general a fan of Do Not Resuscitate orders, and think one should try all possible to maintain life (after all, we only get one), but I don't want to live like that when I get old. It's not a life. My grandmother has Alzheimer's and it's a terrible, terrible existence. What are we doing to our fellow citizens when we just make them hold on to life when life is no good any longer? I will try not to launch into a Euthanasia speech, because people are afraid of that word (see also: abortion, socialism, condoms, feminism, queer), but there's gotta be a choice here. My grandmother fell in the bathroom for the SECOND TIME (Nursing home, get your act together), and now she's in the hospital because she has gotten sick and has another infection and isn't eating or drinking. I find this out as soon as I arrive home, 4 hours away from having seen her for 2 days.

It's good to be home though. I'm having some leftover wine and eating some dinner and going to meet some of the OMGWTFRVA crew out for Karaoke tonight. I don't have to work tomorrow, yay!

Beachbeachbeach

The recent cooler weather has me lusting for fall again, but today it was summer-hot and I'm headed to my beach for a few days so I've got summer on the brain. September is a difficult time to pack for, since it is warm during the day but really cool at the beach at night. This is unlike the city where the nighttime temperature doesn't vary that much from the daytime. So I'm packing my summer sandals and breezy dresses but trying to figure out what sweaters and jackets and pants (gasp!) to pair with them.

Tomorrow night I'll be here with some of my old high schools pals doing our band gang reunion. It's our tradition to bonfire on the beach, make Dorito s'mores, drink, and catch up. I haven't done it in ages and I CANNOT wait.

We'll also be staying in view of this again, for a cheap, cheap rate (yay off-season). It is also my goal to find us a better breakfast place this time. Other plans include kayaking and/or biking, fancy dinner, hot shoes, Make-it-Rain(TM), plastic menagerie margaritas and DE nachos at Tijuana Taxi, happy hour at Stoney Lonen, Dogfish Head distillery tour, maybe a show at the Cork, swimming in the finally-warm Atlantic Ocean, maybe some trivia at the Slam, photo-taking, magazines and newspapers on the beach, crossword puzzles, visiting my grandma in the nursing home, and scattering my father's ashes with my mom over the beach.

Packing is always a challenge for me because I like to have all my wardrobe at my disposal, and trying to limit to just a few pairs of shoes, pieces of jewelry, belts, etc is difficult. I've already overpacked, but I prefer it that way.

hot shoes

I have a shoe addiction. I suppose there are worse things. And I don't really think it's an addiction, so much as a strong penchant and great love of beautiful things. But I bought 2 pairs of shoes last night (they were MEGA on sale though). I know they are awfully similar, but if you know me, you know I can't pass up anything sparkly, even when I already have a faboo vintage pair of black sequin pumps (eek!).

The pictures do the shoes NO JUSTICE.

These are just stunning in person. I've always loved the colored back-of-the-heel look and don't have any shoes like that.

I'm not normally a fan of that exposed platform like that, but when wearing the shoe, it doesn't look all weird and you can't tell.

Meal Order

I had my meals backwards tonight (which I really never do, I am a firm believer in food order), but the Starbucks ice cream was calling my name, so I polished off 1/3 of the pint when I got home. I hate how some ice cream, after awhile, loses its taste as your mouth gets numb from the cold (perhaps a sign to stop eating it, eh?). I was still hungry for real food, so I put together a concoction I discovered by accident when I was at Rebecca's parents' house and we were scrounging for food: canned corn, cheese, peanuts, a tomato (or in this case, salsa), pepper and stir! It's surprisingly satisfying.

This is my ideal table spread. Lots of coffee and like beverages, sunshine, and bowls piled high with biscuits. (from My Funny Eye)

I'm finally feeling better and don't have any plans tonight, and for once am antsy and feel like socializing, which I haven't felt like doing in about a week. I'm trying to decide if I should go to my new favorite local bar. I wonder if they have wireless? I haven't tried to see if my dad's laptop works again.

(Lavender Lines)

The suddenly cooler temperatures has me all excited for fall and tall boots and jackets and the fall smell. I am always sad for one season to end (except for Winter-- Winter can die a horrible death). I love summer but I also love fall. Dressing for me is so much easier in summer because I can throw on clothes and go, and that's what bothers me about fall dressing, especially because I get cold so easily.

Unrelated, I LOVE this photo of Michelle Williams. I'm a sucker for sepia.

In Sync

This is so well done. The opening is unique with the props, but the good part is a bit of the way in where the partner dancing starts. The dancers are completely in-sync with each other. They are so toned. It's remarkable. The costumes really allow us to see the entire body and the movement of it.

crave

I just remembered I have Java Chip Frappuccino Starbucks ice cream in my freezer at home and now I'm desperate to have some but cannot because I am at work. It was free with a coupon, which makes it even better.

baaa
I'm mostly over my cold, though I still have coughing spells, especially if I need to blow my nose. I'm not sure how on earth those two things are related, but I know if I start a certain kind of coughing, that I need to get a tissue ASAP. I think I am wired wrong. I'm cold when others are hot, I have a bionic nose, I get back pains when I drink something cold, I bruise if scratch myself too hard. Clearly I was wired wrong. I would like to be recalled and refurbished, please, kthanxbai.

How come when I take blurry photos they never turn out this good?

I'm not a tattoo person, but this is a lovely photo, truly.
